"Especially in terms of its output impedance, the VAC 170i iQ resembles other "classic" tube-amp designs such as the (now discontinued) PrimaLuna Prologue Premium. A common argument in favor of such designs is that they don't employ feedback to reduce their output impedance, which can have negative sonic consequences. But there are also sonic consequences to such high output impedances. As illustrated in figs.1 and 2, when used from the 4–8 ohm and 8–16 ohm transformer taps, this amplifier will change sonic character with every loudspeaker it is used with."



" Not wishing to revive the separates-vs-integrated debate, I'm loath to declare VAC's Sigma 170i an alternative to its far beefier pre/power kin. Yet it laughed at everything I could throw at it, delivering via Sasha DAWs the kind of levels and soundstage which did justice to the scale of both 'big band' and classical orchestras. It's a love letter to the much-revered KT88, and it left me stunned."



"If you’re looking for the “tube magic,” the Valve Amplification Company Sigma170i has it and then some. Vocals are warm and rich and highs are extended but never strident. The bass is rich and can be a little loose, but that’s the price you pay for that liquid midrange. Careful setup and speaker matching will need to be considered. Outside of that, this amp is a true performer in the world of tube electronics.


In my listening space, I never wanted for more power than those 85w could deliver, even when listening to very dynamic music. While the speaker taps are listed for 4, 8 & 16 ohms, the fairly flat 6ohm impedance curve of the Joseph Perspective2s never seemed to present an issue (I used the 8ohm taps). In the end, I can say that I enjoyed my time with the Valve Amplification Company Sigma 170i very much. "
