Before buying the Wadia 27 there was a very lengthy email communication going back and forth to establish an impression whether to trust this seller. He seemed to be the perfect gentleman and I didn´t have any reason to think that the gear would not be in best order. Once the unit arrived I just made a brief inspection from the outside and took of the upper lid, because the Wadia 27 is known to have problems with blown up capacitors and heat problems in general. First thing to be seen was a blown up capacitor in the power supply. That itself must not be a problem in itself. So I measured the voltages coming out of the power supply, which were correct. I am an electronics engineer and therefore know my way around. After that I quickly hooked up a generator and a scope in order to check what´s coming out of the outputs. That already didn´t seem to be correct. But I had to postpone further investigation until the weekend. Once I returned I took a deeper look into the gear and found out that it had a very unprofessionally repaired high voltage damage which obviously had started on the input module. There are two components which are blown up and never been replaced. I then took a look at the digital boards. There is one above the other so one has to remove the top one in order to be able to have a look at them both. On the top one there is a major repair, again completely unprofassionally done. Two of the upper four DAC chips (PCM1702) were replaced with lower grade ones coming out of a completely different production charge. That itself is bad alone but the soldering was done in a very bad way which is especially dangerous since it is a four-layer board and if the soldering isn´t done correctly layers can be connected which should not be. Some Op-amps are replaced too, again poor soldering. I then, for the first time, connected the Wadia to my active speakers to find out what effects all that might have on the actual performance. Starting with 16/44 the DAC would shut itself down after two/three titles or just after jumping from one to the next title. Higher resolution don´t work at all, the DAC just shuts down. It is apparent that the repairs weren´t done correctly and that probably some layers were connected whcih shouldn´t be. I got in contact with the seller, telling him about my findings and asking him to take the component back. He claimed that it was in perfect working order when he shipped it. That is complete nonsense. He claims now that I damaged the gear and did the faulty repair myself. He doesn´t want to take the gear back and doesn´t want to pay the money back.Normally I wouöld bring this up at the police but since he is located in Italy it would be useless.
