This is the last Monitor Audio PL-500 II from 2022 that we delivered completely new to a customer of ours in Belgium. Are being sold due to moving out and switching to the Monitor Audio PL-200 III. These speakers are in absolutely new condition and are completely flawless. This pair in Ebony is also the most beautiful PL-500 II that we have ever seen ourselves in the detail of the veneer.

AudioFacts has a lot of experience with these audiophile and high-end loudspeakers. In the past 8 years, we have sold 7 pairs of them. Even now in 2024, it is still a speaker that appeals to the imagination. The design of PL-500 II was created to design the most ideal speaker. And the advantages of this choice are still leading today.

The PL-500 II uses a D'appolito speaker setup. This means that not 1 but 2 mid-units are used. This creates a more open and physically tangible sound image. Another major advantage is that the distortion is significantly reduced thanks to the use of two mid-drivers. Voices and instruments are reproduced lifelike in sound and size.

Each PL-500 II has no fewer than 4 bass units of 20cm each. This creates a better distribution of the load in the bass. And therefore much less distortion. And you can hear that in the ultimate power and authority of the bass reproduction. Whereby the layering in sound is of a rare beauty. The round shape of the cabinet of the PL-500 II provides more solidity and considerably fewer standing waves.

The housing of these speakers has a full matrix construction internal, which increases the stiffness enormously and reduces the standing waves. But Monitor Audio then goes one step further by placing the mid-drivers in their housing to limit distortion even more. The bass drivers are in a kind of cylinder for even better timing.

The mid and bass drivers are evenly attached by a long screw on the back (drive-through-bolt) of the speaker. This has the advantage that you get less vibration and distortion. And the speaker looks aesthetically tighter on the front. Because only the bass drivers and mid-drivers are covered, the beautiful Muirhead leather becomes more visible.

Monitor Audio has the fastest drivers in this price range thanks to the used materials and techniques. Both the bass drivers and the mid drivers are ceramic drivers reinforced with aluminum and magnesium. The back of the drivers is reinforced with carbon fiber. This creates an ultimate level of layering and richness in sound.

The used A.M.T.-tweeter has many advantages over a dome tweeter: greater load capacity, considerably less distortion, more natural sound, more dynamic range, better timing, and a flatter impedance curve. And creates a much larger, deeper, and higher stage (spread). So voices and instruments are reproduced more intimately and above all more tangibly.

Regardless of money, there are only a few loudspeakers that can create such a large holographic 3-dimensional sound image. Whereby voices and instruments are reproduced in their actual size and shape. These loudspeakers can reproduce acoustic recordings especially intimately and compactly. You can also immediately perceive the differences in the height of voices and instruments.

A trumpet that is reproduced lifelike in both sound and physical tangibility. The PL-500 II makes you perceive Miles Davis playing his trumpet about 40cm higher (actual height) than the A.M.T. tweeter. Height diversity is the most difficult and tricky part of real High-End sound reproduction. But the PL-500 II can do that too.
