Description
Up for sale, a real collector's item: The Cartridge Man Music Maker III cartridge in excellent condition - less than 50 hours of listening time, original packaging and cartridge guard included, as well as user manual (signed by the manufacturer), original box and latest generation black "Isolator" (as pictured).
The Music Maker III was created by Len "The Cartridge Man" Gregory. These are, effectively, completely rebuilt Grados, using "Moving Iron" technology: neither MM nor MC, but the best of both worlds in my opinion. The output level is that of an MM, which means you can dispense with the cost, hassle, and all-too-often jacked up treble that comes with the need for higher gain of MC cartridges; it also means you get the rich and fluid tonality and the sense of sonic "solidity" and structure of the best MM's out there, like the Shure V15V MR or XMR - with which the Music Maker shares absolutely stunning tracking capabilities : no record is to bass-heavy for this cart. The level of detail, dynamics and speed, however, as well as the imaging quality, are worthy of a really good MC; this is indeed a very revealing cartridge, but without a trace of harshness or sibilance or grain in the playback. In its day it got more than its share of astounding reviews.
Len Gregory, sadly, passed away a couple of years ago, and his cartridges are becoming very rare on the used market : I'm only selling this one because... I have 3 others left :). This is one example which he re-built entirely for me : only the body is used and does have marks (see pictures), but he gave it a new suspension and stylus. As far as I know this is the last one he re-built before passing away.
Specifications :
Variable-reluctance stereo phono cartridge with line-contact stylus and silver coils.
Output: 4.0 mV output
Loading: 47K ohms (not capacitance sensitive.)
Tracking Force: 1.6 grams.
VTA/SRA Alignment: Front face of cartridge perpendicular to record surface (viewed from the side).
New price was about 1300 Euros with the Isolator - a gadget also developed by Len Gregory, which effectively damps unwanted vibrations from the head shell. The attached photo shows the cartridge with the actual Isolator model included in the sale.
International insured shipping with sign-on delivery for all mainland Europe. UK buyers please contact me as customs will be an issue.
